Our History
MCSA, a non-profit founded in 1991, was created to address the social needs of the Muscatine area. A group of citizens sought to preserve 35 dorm-style rooms at the YMCA for single men in need. The late Richard Maeglin purchased the building, originally called the “Heart of Hearts,” later the Muscatine Center for Strategic Action (now the Muscatine Center for Social Action). MCSA aimed to improve quality of life in Muscatine County by addressing unmet needs.
In 2000, MCSA refined its mission to providing emergency and temporary shelter, basic health care, and educational/vocational support. Programs shifted toward helping homeless individuals regain stability through expanded case management and skill development.
In 2011, it formalized homeless-prevention programming.
The Muscatine Domestic Violence Shelter joined MCSA in 2014 to support those fleeing abuse.
In 2017, MCSA updated its mission to “provide housing, basic health care, educational and support services for those in need in Muscatine County.”
MCSA continues to uphold its founders’ vision by evolving to meet emerging community needs.
