Homeless Prevention

When life changes make maintaining housing difficult the Homeless Prevention Program may be able to assist.

 

The program is designed to provide immediate assistance and supportive services to individuals and families facing a housing crisis and on the verge of homelessness. We work to prevent displacement.

Services may include:

  • Financial assistance including help with rent, utility payments, and security deposits.

  • A navigator providing supports, including job and housing search assistance and connections with other essential community resources.

Domestic Violence Shelter

The Shelters' location is undisclosed to provide greater security for its residents. It has a comprehensive security system and measures to provide a safe refuge for women and their children fleeing domestic violence.

 

The Shelters' setting promotes healing and change. Trained staff are on-site 24 hours daily to provide direction, support, and resources for each family member's needs. 

The Shelter provides a warm home-style living setting. Bedrooms are assigned and include all bedding and pillows. Guests share a living, full kitchen, bathroom spaces, and laundry. The Shelter provides plenty of room for children to play and family space.

 

Food, clothing, and toys will be made immediately available for those fleeing.

Pet fostering is available during your stay.

Overnight and Transitional Housing

There are times that, for various reasons, people need an opportunity to live at no cost or nominal cost to recover financially and re-establish independent living. MCSA provides short-term housing and direction during that time at 312 Iowa Avenue.

The Family & Women Housing Units provide a secure living space for families with children and single women.

 

Eight private rooms are available, and accommodations can be made for any size family. Each unit includes beds, bedding, pillows, towels, and basic supplies. Additional beds or cribs are available as needed. 

 

The units share a large open living space, kitchenette, bathroom, and laundry.

Space is always available for those in Muscatine County who need a place to stay. Children are bussed to their current school.

Single Men Housing Overnight Housing is available. Guests have a designated space within the gym, a mattress, bedding and pillows, towels, and basic supplies. A locker and tub are also assigned for storage of personal items. Shared living room, bathroom, and laundry is also available. 

 

Hours for rest are 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Other sleeping hours may be arranged for those working nights.

 

The following is available to ALL guests of MCSA: 24-hour staffing assistance; food, clothing, and other basic need items; support programs; and referrals to other local agencies. 

 

Check-in for short-term housing is available 24/7, with identification.

Pet fostering is also available during a guest's stay.

Apartment Rental

MCSA Dorm Units at 312 Iowa Avenue: One-room, dorm-style apartments are available for men to rent. There are 35 units on our second floor, which are accessible by elevator and stairs. The building is accessible by 24-hour card key access for renters.

 

Monthly rent is a nominal $350, including electric, water, Wi-Fi, and cable. 

 

Rooms are furnished with a bed, dresser, desk, two chairs, refrigerator, microwave, closet, bedding, and towels.

 

Apartments have a shared lounge area with a large screen TV, bathroom and showers, and laundry.

MCSA 5th Street Apartments: Offsite apartment units for rent.

 

Other Units:​

  • Rentals for men over 55 with the Magnus program

  • Other rentals in partnership with local landlords

Food Pantry

The Food Pantry provides quality food items to households experiencing food insecurity through a weekly food pantry to help individuals and families in need of groceries or household essentials.

 

The pantry provides a welcoming space where anyone in Muscatine County can access nutritious food and support.

 

Volunteers and community donations keep the shelves stocked year-round.

The pantry is open 10 a.m. to noon every Tuesday in the garden level of 312 Iowa Avenue.

Those unable to visit in person may request a home delivery by calling 563-264-3278, and emergency food bags are available around the clock at 312 Iowa Avenue.

Peer Drop In Center

The Center, located at 312 Iowa Avenue, provides mental health and recovery support through a collaboration with the Robert Young Center. It offers drop-in hours for anyone 18 or older.

 

The center serves as a safe space to relax, connect with others, and access recovery-oriented services. 

Services include:

  • Conversation with trained peer support specialists.

  • Participation in guided programs like WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) or SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training).

  • A welcoming environment to relax, with no appointment needed.

  • Confidential and free.

  • Connect with others and find community through shared activities.

  • Drop in hours are Monday through Friday, 4 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Transitional Housing Peer Support for Mental Health

MCSA offers a separate home-like setting to serve as a sanctuary of healing, understanding, and empowerment for individuals experiencing mental health and substance abuse crises. 

The respite house, located at 205 East Fifth Street, is staffed by trained peer support specialists who understand the challenges faced because they've been there, too.

  • The homey, welcoming environment is designed for your comfort and healing. Rest, recover, and recharge in a space free from judgment and stigma.

  • ​Discover a variety of approaches to well-being, including mindfulness, art therapy, yoga, and more. We'll help you find what works best for you.

  • ​Regain control of your life with personalized support that focuses on your strengths, your choices, and your goals. 

  • Your stay can last up to 7 days in length.

On Site Wellness Programs

Adult Eye Clinic

The Adult Vision Clinic provides underserved adult Muscatine-area residents with access to eye care and vision correction.

 

  • Dr. Peter Korpi is the Director of the Clinic, which is staffed by local volunteer optometrists and offers routine eye examinations and glasses as necessary.

  •  A $10 co-pay is required from each patient, which covers the examination and glasses as needed.

  •  A client may be referred by MCSA, Muscatine County Community Services, the Department of Human Services (DHS), or Community Action when it is determined they are within 100% of poverty guidelines and do not qualify for other medical assistance programs.

  • Located in the lower level of 312 Iowa Avenue.

Patients needing further care (for pre-glaucoma, glaucoma, or other more serious conditions) will be referred to the Ophthalmology Department at the University of Iowa, which serves all Iowa residents, regardless of ability to pay.

Behavioral Health 

The Robert Young Center offers Integrated Health Home services.

 

  • Affiliated with UnityPoint Health–Trinity Muscatine, the Robert Young Center provides a full range of behavioral health services for adults and children.

  • Located in the lower level of 312 Iowa Avenue.
